Coping with high temperatures affecting solar panel efficiency during summer

November 14, 2023

As summer approaches, the intensity of solar radiation gradually increases, bringing convenience to our lives but also challenges. In particular, solar panels may be affected by long exposure to high temperatures. This article will introduce how solar panels work under high temperature conditions and corresponding coping measures.

First, let's understand how solar panels work. Household solar panels are usually tested at 25°C (77°F), so their normal working temperature range should be between 15°C and 35°C. Within this range, solar panels can perform optimally in terms of power generation. However, when the temperature of the solar panels rises to 65°C (149°F), its efficiency will significantly decrease.

So, how does temperature affect the efficiency of solar panels? Most solar panels are made of silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells, which are protected by glass plates and metal frames. By comparing solar panels to cars parked in hot summers, we can better understand this problem. Under high temperature conditions, car windows and frames will become very hot, although this situation will not cause fires, it will affect the performance of solar panels.

To prevent high temperature environments from negatively impacting solar panels, we need to pay attention to an indicator called "temperature coefficient". This index reflects the sensitivity of solar panels to temperature changes, expressed as a percentage per degree Celsius. For example, if the efficiency of a solar panel is 17%, and the temperature coefficient is -0.45, then the efficiency will drop by 0.45% for every 1℃ increase above 25°C.

How do we solve this problem? The simplest method is to leave some airflow space when installing solar panels, allowing air to flow beneath the solar panels to help dissipate heat. Additionally, choose products with lower temperature coefficients to maximize efficiency.
