From the first experimental samples to widely used commercial products, the development history of solar panels has undergone multiple improvements and breakthroughs. In this article, we will introduce the development history of solar panels.


1. Monocrystalline Silicon Solar Panels (1958)


In 1958, scientists at Bell Labs in the United States manufactured the first monocrystalline silicon solar panel. This type of solar panel had low efficiency (only 6%) and high cost, and was mainly used in space science research.


2. Polycrystalline Silicon Solar Panels (1960)


About two years later, the research group at the American company Sylvan and Wekesser improved the production process based on monocrystalline silicon solar panels and manufactured polycrystalline silicon solar panels. Although this type of solar panel had lower efficiency than monocrystalline silicon solar panels (only 14%), its cost was significantly reduced, and it gradually entered commercial production.


3. CIGS Solar Panels (1974)


In 1974, Karl W. Böer, a scientist at the University of Denver in the United States, invented a new material for solar panels - copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS). Unlike traditional monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon, CIGS solar panels could generate electricity at lower light intensity, with low production cost and high efficiency (20%). However, long-term stability and durability did not have commercial viability and remained in the research stage.


4. The First Commercial Solar Panel (1983)


In 1983, the polycrystalline silicon solar panel produced by Toshiba Corporation in Japan became the world's first commercial solar panel, and it was put into commercial production. Since then, the use of solar panels has gradually spread around the world.


5. Thin-film Solar Panels (1990s)


In the 1990s, due to the demand for environmental protection and energy utilization, solar panels were developed in various forms, among which thin-film solar panels were an important development. The thickness of this type of solar panel was only 1/100 to 1/300 of traditional silicon solar panels, the production process was simpler, the cost was lower, and it further promoted solar power.


In summary, solar panels have undergone multiple improvements and developments, from monocrystalline silicon solar panels to polycrystalline silicon solar panels, CIGS solar panels, commercial solar panels, and thin-film solar panels, gradually becoming a widely used, low-cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly energy device.
